Currently there are eight sites located across
CA that are affiliated with the UC Office of
the President’s Academic Centers of Excellence.
The Bay Area site is located at the East County
Boys and Girls Club in Pittsburg, CA. The Academic
Center of Excellence aims to build a college
going culture in the East Bay. Our objectives
are 1.) To promote a college-going culture among
students in this community. 2.) To increase
their academic competitiveness 3.) To increase
the number of students who enroll in two-and
four-year institutions of higher education.

Information:
The Adapted Physical Education Specialist of
Pittsburg Unified School District organizes
a yearly trip to Yosemite Institute. Approxmately
20 special education students and 4 staff members
participate in this program each year. The purpose
of this trip is to provide personal experience
with a scientific principle, as well as encouraging
the student’s intrinsic motivation.

Information:
Pittsburg High School Academic Achievers Association
is a school based non-profit organization comprised
of parents and interested community members
who support and encourage academic excellence
at PHS. An Award Ceremony and Luncheon is help
each semester for grades previously earned.
Students do not have to pay or apply to be part
of this program, they just have to receive a
3.0 or better GPA. The program is am incentive
for students to keep focused on grades throughout
their high school years, so they can continue
on to higher education.

“FourAC” is a volunteer organization
used to support the reduction of the historically
high minority dropout rate by using tutors and
mentors to help build self-esteem in socially-and
financially-disadvantaged students. The methods
of “FourAC” involve mobilizing experienced
and expert resources among the parents and like-minded
community members to focus on improving communication,
responsibility, and accountability among these
groups.

The Success Through Self Academy Bridges the

Information:
PAL is a youth crime prevention program that
utilizes educational, athletic and recreational
activities to create trust and understanding
between police officers and youth. It is based
on the conviction that young people- if they
are reached early enough – can develop
strong positive attitudes towards police officers
in their journey thorough life toward the goal
of maturity and good citizenship. The PAL program
brings youth under the supervision and positive
influence of a law enforcement agency and expands
public awareness about the role of a police
officer and the reinforcement of the responsible
values and attitudes instilled in young people
by their parents.
Studies have shown that if a young person respects
a police officer on the ball field, gym or classroom,
the youth will likely come to respect the laws
that police officers enforce. Such respect is
beneficial to the youth, the police officer,
the neighborhood and the business community.

The National Police Athletics/Activities Leagues,

The Pittsburg Pre-School and Community Council’s
(PPSCC) Mentoring Program provides mentorship,
a daily homework club, and recreational and
cultural enrichment activities to 50 at-risk

In an effort to help college-bound high school
students perform well on SAT and improve their
chances of attending the college of their choice,
the library will present a series of workshops
offered by the Princeton Review, an organization
that provides test preparation for many examinations
such as the ACT, GMAT, the GRE, and others.
There will be nine workshops in the series beginning
with a practice SAT test. The workshops will
alternate between practice examinations and
classroom instruction.

Information:
The Youth Achievement and Possibilities program
targets the children of low-income working parents
who live in the unincorporated community of
Bay Point. YAP has assisted these families by
offering a structured program of age- appropriate
educational and enrichment activities to young
children ages 6-11 years old during the four
major “gaps” in the school calendar.
YAP/gap keeps at risk youngsters safe and constructively
engaged allowing their parents to maintain their
jobs (and peace of mind) during school vacations.
