One Rockin’ Pirate!
By PHS student Carla De Leon, CALIFORNIA NETWORK® intern for pittsburgca.net.
Move over Jack Sparrow because Bob the Dread Pirate is taking over!

Now, he’s not some strong, sword-wielding character from a hit action movie. It’s actually none other than Pittsburg High School’s very own, Mr. Robert Butterfield! He has worked at the high school for ten years, first starting out as a History teacher in 1999.

Today, he is part of the Math department and teaches Calculus, Pre-Calculus and Algebra.

Mr. Butterfield is not your typical “geek with the glasses” Math teacher who talks of nothing but ways to multiply different numbers and applying it to real life; he’s more like one of the students. He likes to listen to The Beatles, Bach and traditional guitar repertoire. He spends most of his time riding his bicycle, playing the guitar, and building Lego castles - along with other things. All of his students know that he loves Starbucks, since they would always find him sipping on a Venti Mocha Frappuccino when they walk into class.

His heroes happen to be Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, Einstein and of course, Jesus, whom he claims are all “creative, peaceful geniuses.” He loves to hang out in his classroom at lunch and enjoys socializing with his students.

He has a knack of randomly telling stories that don’t relate to school, slipping in a story about a camping trip or a weird bike ride as he’s explaining how to do synthetic division to his students. He definitely knows how to entertain those around him.

Butterfield has had his own share of great experiences at Pittsburg High. He explains that hearing his students getting accepted into a college or getting a scholarship makes him really proud. His funniest memory was when two of his students claimed that they were 45 minutes late to class because they had saved the life of a man who collapsed from a heart attack. Talk about imagination, huh? You can never get past this pirate!

In his eyes, the best part of being a PIRATE is “sharing life with the inclusive diversity of the many people who are connected to this great institution.” He is currently on the PHS “B” Team: he intends to “B” at the high school for as long as he can make a positive contribution. No need to worry, that’s exactly what he has done!

Besides being the sponsor of the Mu Alpha Theta club at the high school, Mr. Butterfield is also a member of the faculty rock n’ roll band! Along with that, he often lends a helping hand with the track meets and participates in student-organized activities.

Wow! He sure has done a lot for the school!

Even if he’s teaching a new trigonometry formula; there is never a dull moment with Mr. Butterfield! Any student would be glad to have a teacher like him. The laughs never stop!

We are all proud to have such an amazing teacher here at our school! Thank you Mr. Butterfield!
