A Day of Great Remembrance
By UCB student Jazmin Lopez, California Network® intern for Belleci Designs/Pittsburgca.net

On Saturday January 23rd the 1st Annual Pittsburg High School Alumni Basketball Game took place to raise funds for the Greg Ashford Memorial Scholarship.

Greg Ashford passed away in June 2001 after a swimming accident. He has been missed dearly by all who knew him. He was a PHS student and admired basketball player, great brother, son, friend, and an inspiration to all, as he thrived for higher education.

Presently, those who knew Greg Ashford the best have come together to keep his legacy alive by creating a scholarship that will be awarded to two high school students that will be graduating in the Spring of 2010, who like Greg, are looking to pursue a higher education attending a four year institution.

The 1st Annual Pittsburg High School Alumni Basketball Game kicked off with a Press Conference at El Matador Restaurant, where guests and participants gathered to feast and remember Greg Ashford.

There were heartwarming hugs and smiles as Pittsburg High School Alumni, friends of Greg Ashford got reacquainted. It was truly a touching moment as the family of Greg Ashford was moved by the number of people who supported them and kept their son in mind and heart.

The Press Conference included guest speakers Pittsburg High School Principal Todd Whitmire, Pittsburg Unified School District Member Vince Ferrante, and Pittsburg High School Alumni and friends of Greg, Trimaine Davis and Hervey Malone II.

Later in the day, a Pittsburg High School Alumni Basketball Game was held at the Pittsburg High School Gymnasium. Friends, family, PHS teachers and city officials came together to celebrate the memory of Greg Ashford. Playing were the odd year alumni versus even year alumni.

Before the game began, Principal Todd Whitmire welcomed everyone to the 1st Annual Pittsburg High School Alumni Game followed by a moment of silence in remembrance of Greg Ashford.

The alumni teams were introduced and welcomed by the PHS Cheerleaders, who pumped the crowd with enthusiasm.

The tip off took place and the teams played their hearts out, showing off their best skills.

The PHS Cheerleaders took the court again at half time performing an up-beat dance routine to Medley of Michael Jackson. Afterward a presentation of a check, representing all the funds that were raised for the Memorial Scholarship, was presented along with great words of wisdom from the Ashford family.

The game concluded with an exciting score of 79-71, the odd year alumni team being the winners.

The players showed great sportsmanship as they congratulated one another for a game well played. Both teams signed the game ball and came together for pictures.

The 1st Annual Pittsburg High School Alumni Basketball Game was a success as the community came together to support the players and helped them further fund the Greg Ashford Memorial Scholarship.
