Three Giant Funding Checks Presented To Local Group!
By LMC student Donny DeCoy, CC Youth @ Work and CALIFORNIA NETWORK® intern for pittsburgca.net.
Three giant symbolic funding checks were presented Friday to the CYES (California Youth Energy Services) program!

A total of $30,000 in checks were presented by the Pittsburg City Council ($10,000), the Pittsburg Power Company ($5,000), and Trans Bay Cable ($15,000).

Corporate VIP’s, along with city dignitaries, included: Mayor Nancy Parent, Vice Mayor Sal Evola, Whitney Johnson and David Martinez of CYES, Garrett Evans and Kolette Simonton of the Pittsburg Power Company, and Jodi Pincus of the RSEC (Rising Sun Energy Center).

CYES is a partnership program of the non-profit, Rising Sun Energy Center – a program that helps the community learn about ways to live a more energy efficient life. Youth from the ages of 15-22, are employed to serve their community with FREE green house calls; a chance to educate residents on ways to save money by reducing the amount of energy they use.

Pittsburg Power Company Community Relations Manager, Kolette Simonton, led the room in a question and answer segment following the ceremony.

In celebration of the ceremonial presentation, refreshments were available for all.

The California Youth Energy Services program installs free equipment, such as light-bulbs and shower heads, and even provide personal recommendations for future savings – all free of cost to the resident.

The teens (CYES) perform these free home energy audits by themselves, and use their own training to recommend the appropriate options for residents!

CYES is in their 10th year – hiring nine, now professional youth from Pittsburg; and servicing over 250 homes in our city alone!

They are in 10 cities this year and the program will likely service over 2,250 homes around the Bay Area.

With pride, Jodi Pinkus, Executive Director of Rising Sun Energy Center received the checks and thanked the City of Pittsburg for all of their continued support.

She also extended her hopes of maintaining a long lasting partnership with our city – a chance for the CYES to impact more lives; each and every summer.

“The program is really great. It’s a way for the youth to get the necessary skills to work at any job, as they learn about their role in the world – globally and locally.”

Youth worker, Gracin Tarantino, a CYES Lead Energy Specialist, has been with the program for over a year now.

“It has been a great opportunity for me to learn several new skills at the job site. I really love the program and I want to see it go to other cities across the Bay Area. It helps people live a more energy efficient life. It’s a good thing.”
